چکیده

The radiative transfer equations for multiple inverse Compton scattering of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation (CMBR) by the hot intra-cluster electrons are solved numerically. The spherical isothermal and inhomogeneous β model has been considered for the electron distribution. The anisotropy of the CMBR caused by scattering, known as thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect, along the radial axis of the medium is compared with the analytical solution of Kompaneets equation. The X-ray data of several clusters of galaxies at low redshifts provide an estimation of the central electron density n0 to be of the order 10. It is found that for this value of n0 the effect of multiple scattering is negligible. The numerically calculated anisotropy along the radial axis matches well with the analytical solution that describes single scattering. The result incorporating multiple scattering is fitted with the recent observation of Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect in the cluster Abell 2163. It is shown that if n0 is greater by an order of magnitude, which could be possible for cluster of galaxies at comparatively higher redshift, multiple scattering would play a significant role at the Wien region of the anisotropy spectrum. A fitting formula for the correction to the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect due to multiple scattering is provided.

Relativistic Corrections to the Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect

We present an extension of the Kompaneets equation which allows relativistic effects to be included to any desired order. Using this, we are able to obtain simple analytic forms for the spectral changes due to the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect in hot clusters, correct to first and second order in the expansion parameter θe = kBTe/mc . These analytic forms agree with previous numerical calculations ...

The Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect

The Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect causes a change in the apparent brightness of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation towards a cluster of galaxies or any other reservoir of hot plasma. Measurements of the effect provide distinctly different information about cluster properties than X-ray imaging data, while combining X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect data leads to new insights into the struc...

Relativistic Corrections to the Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect for Clusters of Galaxies. Ii. Inclusion of Peculiar Velocities

We extend the formalism of the relativistic thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect to the system moving with a velocity ~ β ≡ ~v/c with respect to the cosmic microwave background radiation. In the present formalism, the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect for the cluster of galaxies with a peculiar velocity ~ β is derived in a straightforward manner by the Lorentz boost of the generalized Kompaneets...

Extensions to the Kompaneets Equation and Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Distortion

Analytical expressions are presented for relativistic corrections to the Kompaneets equation and the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich y-distortion. The latter provides a convenient method of inferring both the temperature and Thomson optical depth of the gas in clusters of galaxies using only observations of the spectrum of CMBR photons passing through the cluster. The relativistic correction gives an additi...

Relativistic Corrections to the Sunyaev-zel’dovich Effect for Clusters of Galaxies. v. Multiple Scattering

We extend the formalism for the calculation of the relativistic corrections to the SunyaevZel’dovich effect for clusters of galaxies and include the multiple scattering effects. We present a systematic method for the inclusion of the multiple scattering effects. The multiple scattering contribution is found to be very small compared with the single scattering contribution. For high-temperature ...
